Editor’s note April 14, 2026: Stylebot is no longer a Newspack partner.
We’ve partnered with Stylebot to make copyediting workflows easier and more efficient. Stylebot’s AI-driven modern style guide is available for all Newspack publishers at a 10% discount.
When Stylebot founder Laura E. Davis noticed her students at the University of Southern California Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism weren’t properly editing the stories they were publishing, she tried giving them the tools to help.
She put style books on their desks and even created a cheat sheet that she taped to their desks. Her tactics didn’t work until she found a way to fold that cheat sheet into Slack. And that’s how Stylebot was born.
Copyediting support embedded into existing workflows
What started as a way to help the next generation of media professionals with their editing became a tool for newsrooms across the US to improve their copyediting workflows. Early adopters include YubaNet and CalMatters.
Stylebot is a modern style guide you can access on Slack, Microsoft Teams, and Google Chrome. The tool uses machine learning and natural language processing to match all types of style guide queries with answers in a human-written style guide.
CalMatters, for example, uses Stylebot to answer questions like, “Does that legislator go by Phil or Phillip?” Questions like this come up frequently for the reporters at CalMatters covering California’s 120 state lawmakers. CalMatters CEO Neil Chase wanted a quick way for editors and reporters to verify each lawmaker’s name, party, and district headquarters. By customizing Stylebot and integrating it into their existing Slack workflows, they can easily find the information they need, such as the location of Megan Dahle’s district office.

Vicki Haddock, CalMatters’ managing editor, is grateful for the time reporters save looking up style rules and editors save fixing mistakes. “Time is time. Whether you’re doing something as a breaking story, or you’re doing a long investigative feature, however much time you don’t have to spend looking something up is time you spend doing something more productive.”
Customized to fit your needs
Any newsroom can start using Stylebot right away, but for newsrooms like CalMatters with specific needs and in-house style guides, Stylebot offers customization that streamlines your resources and puts all your editorial documentation in one place.
With Stylebot, you don’t have to switch between documents to get an answer to one style question. All of your publication-specific rules are combined with Stylebot’s style guide to answer questions quickly and seamlessly.
And just like CalMatters, you can incorporate other documents as well. Whether you have a guide for writing newsletters, suggestions for SEO best practices, or an editorial operations manual, Stylebot will put your resources all in one place. Newspack publishers receive a 47% discount on Stylebot’s customization services and half off the setup fee.
Providing support beyond the style guide
Stylebot is designed to help journalists improve their credibility without sacrificing efficiency in today’s 24/7 media landscape. Sometimes that means consulting the style guide to stay consistent, and other times it involves much bigger questions. That’s why Stylebot is partnering with Trusting News to expand the resources we’re offering journalists at a time when Americans’ trust in news has reached historic lows.
Trusting News is a nonprofit that helps journalists actively earn audience trust with newsroom-tested, research-backed practices. And now, journalists can ask Stylebot questions such as, “How do we report on misinformation?” or, “How do I counter accusations of bias?”

Stylebot’s partnership with Trusting News is one of the many ways the company is helping journalists save time without sacrificing quality and evolving traditional editorial resources to help newsrooms adapt to a rapidly evolving media landscape.
