At least five more publications are set to join the Newspack lineup, courtesy of a three-year, $2 million grant program from the Knight Foundation.
This second year of grants provides $20,000 to 26 newsrooms to improve their technology stack, including “tools that prioritize and enhance audience and business development, editorial content production, revenue streams and modes for membership and audience engagement,” according to Knight’s grant announcement.
Knight is expected to seek applications for its final round of these grants early next year.
Applicants were asked to designate the CMS they’d be using, and of the 26 grantees, 14 chose Newspack, and another eight chose WordPress in general. Nine of the newsrooms who chose Newspack are already launched with us or are already underway. They are:
- Arizona Center for Investigative Reporting
- Black Voice News
- Growing Community Media
- Houston Defender Network
- Prison Journalism Project
- The Rafu Shimpo (not yet relaunched)
- The Sacramento Observer
- Washington City Paper
- Wisconsin Watch
The five newsrooms that will be coming our way soon, based on their applications, are:
There’s a chance that the others who designated WordPress in general will find their way here, as well.
The 26 were chosen from 176 applicants, and the selection process was led by News Revenue Hub.
