The Newspack Themes include a field where you can add a subtitle, or dek, to your posts. This subtitle will be displayed with the title on single posts, or can optionally be displayed with a post when using the Homepage Posts block.

Adding a Subtitle

To add a Subtitle to a post, follow these steps:

  1. Edit the post you’d like to add the subtitle to.
  2. In the right sidebar, select Document tab at the top. If the right sidebar is not visible in the editor, it can be opened by clicking the cog icon in the top-right corner:
  1. Open the Article Subtitle panel, and add your subtitle text to the Set a Subtitle for the Article field:
  1. Click Update to save your changes.

Existing subtitles will need to be edited or deleted in the same field in the sidebar — it’s not possible to edit the text that displays in the editor directly.

Subtitles support the following limited set of HTML styling tags:

  • <b> – Bold text
  • <strong> – Important text
  • <i> – Italic text
  • <em> – Emphasized text
  • <mark> – Marked text
  • <small> – Smaller text
  • <del> – Deleted text
  • <ins> – Inserted text
  •  – Subscript text
  •  – Superscript text
  • <u> – Underlined text

Subtitle Placement

When you publish your post, the subtitle will appear underneath the post title:

Displaying a Subtitle with the Homepage Posts block

When using the Newspack Themes with the Newspack Blocks, the Homepage Posts block will have a toggle to display the subtitles with the block. When turned on, any post that has a subtitle will display it.

To turn this option on for one of your blocks, follow these steps:

  1. In the editor, select the Homepage Posts block you would like to edit.
  2. In the right sidebar, select Block tab at the top. If the right sidebar is not visible in the editor, it can be opened by clicking the cog icon in the top-right corner.
  1. Locate the Post Control Settings panel and turn on the Show Subtitle toggle.
  1. If a post in the block has a Subtitle, it will display it; if not, there will be no change.
The Homepage Posts block with Show Subtitle turned on; the center post displays the subtitle in italics.
  1. Click Update to save your changes.
