Google’s $300 million commitment to news this week added new tools for journalists, adding to its direct cash support and training for newsrooms over the past two years. They’re collected in Google’s new Journalist Studio.

A new product called Pinpoint will take piles of text and output the most common names and locations mentioned throughout. The Common Knowledge Project looks to sort and interactively display the wealth of public records and information specific to local jurisdictions.

Anyone interested in using this suite has to apply for access, giving Google an idea of who is putting these to work.
