The Newspack team will name in the next two weeks the second cohort of pilot newsrooms that will further guide development of the emerging platform for small and medium-sized publishers.
About 500 applicants are being considered for the approximately 50 spots in the next group. These 50 will show that the work we’ve done with the first cohort of a dozen newsrooms can scale up and meet a variety of needs. Those charter newsrooms are expected to publicly relaunch on Newspack by mid-October.
The applications being considered represent a broad cross section of niche and local publishing. We received interest from newsrooms around the world, covering business, sports, tech, and regional and local news. Our goal will be to have those sites relaunched — or initially launched, in the case of a few applicants — by February, if not sooner.
The selection process is being led by our partners at Spirited Media and the News Revenue Hub.
